NEW. "IO" table lamp
NEW. "IO" (A Moon of Jupiter)
Part of the new series inspired by the tools of antique astronomy:
The geometry, the details of the instruments, the unusual configurations dictated by practical necessity and all created for scientific exploration.
Beginning in the early of the 19th. century and booming through the early 20th century, telescopes were among the most advanced tools ever created and used by science.
In there, inside the bold and complex configuration of the earliest observatory telescopes lay a magnificent design aesthetic: The Pulkovo Telescope of Russia, The Great Melbourne of Australia, The Leviathan of Parsontown in Ireland, The Royal Greenwich Observatory in England and The Great Reflector at Harvard University. All designed and constructed without a standardized "playbook". Each one was different. Each- beautiful! These observatory eyes were awe-inspiring to behold.
I design and make lamps. Here, my own, small tribute to these brilliant creations. The shapes and forms distilled.
Shown: "IO". The 'broken arc' shape is often seen in my works and has become a signature element in my designs. It implies the roof and barn doors of the domed observatories. The repeating brass details- part of the telescopes cylindrical body. The thin metal rods and ball ends- part of the armatures that support the telescopes body.
Brass, Glass, Acryli-Glass, Steel, Walnut.
